Guide to Medicare Supplement Plan N

Guide to Medicare Supplement Plan N
Medicare Supplement insurance was created to help Medicare beneficiaries cover some of the out-of-pocket costs not covered by Original Medicare (Medicare Parts A and B).

There are different Medicare Supplement plans that provide benefits to help cover such out-of-pocket costs. Medicare Supplement Plan N is one of the types of Medicare Supplement plans that are available in the market. When considering Plan N, it's important to consider what is covered by Original Medicare (Medicare Parts A and B). Medicare Part A helps cover hospital services and Medicare Part B helps cover medical services. Original Medicare generally pays up to 80% of approved charges, leaving the Medicare beneficiary to pay for the rest.1

Medicare Supplement Plan N has Some Interesting and Helpful Benefits

Plan N helps pay for foreign travel emergencies up to plan limits.2 If you travel overseas, Plan N will pay 80% of medically necessary emergency care services beginning during the first 60 days of your trip up to a lifetime maximum benefit of $50,000.3

Plan N pays 100% of the Part B coinsurance, however, you must pay a copayment of up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits that don’t result in an inpatient admission.4

Features of Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan N

What people may prefer about Plan N is that it pays 100% of Part A and Part B coinsurance. Listed are other features of Medicare Supplement Plan N:

  • Medicare Part A deductible is covered 100%
  • For hospice care, Plan N pays the Medicare copayment/coinsurance as long as you meet Medicare’s requirements, including a doctor’s certification of terminal illness
  • When your Medicare Part A hospital benefits end, Plan N will pay whatever amount Medicare would have paid for up to an additional 365 days
  • Pays the coinsurance costs for up to 100 days in a skilled nursing facility as long as you meet Medicare’s requirements
  • Covers (up to 3 pints) blood transfusions
  • It does not pay excess charges (see below)

Excess Charges

Medicare Part B excess charges occur when a health care provider charges more than the Medicare-approved amount. You may be able to negotiate the costs with the provider before medical care is given. If not, and you still want to go to this provider, they can only charge you 15% more than the Medicare-approved amount.5 Some states do not allow Medicare Part B excess charges.

Medicare Supplement Insurance Can Vary by Provider

Medicare Supplement insurance is sold by private insurance companies who must adhere to the same benefit pay out structure as all the standardized Medicare Supplement insurance plans. The difference may be in the premium amount for each plan. Research insurance providers and Medicare Supplement insurance plans to find the right fit for your needs.
